Cookware with Teflon® brand non-stick coatings are manufactured using a liquid coating supplied by DuPont.
In the cookware plant, this liquid coating is applied directly to the metal surface of the pan; sometimes two
or three layers of coatings are applied. The pan is baked in a high-temperature oven to remove the liquid and
to ensure that the coating adheres to the metal pan. The finished coating is a dried, durable non-stick material
which delivers the easy clean and non-stick performance that you expect from your cookware coated with Teflon® non-stick.
PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) is a processing aid used in the manufacture of the fluoropolymer material contained in the
liquid non-stick coating. PFOA is removed during the baking and curing steps in the high temperature oven. Some studies
suggest that there may be trace amounts of residual PFOA in the final coatings. However, the potential exposure to PFOA
from the use of non-stick cookware is of such low levels, that the risk to the consumer is negligible.
To date, there are no human health effects known to be caused by PFOA, although study of the chemical
continues. » More

"The EPA does not have any indication that the public is being exposed to PFOA through the use of Teflon-coated or other trademarked non-stick cookware. Teflon and other trademarked products are not PFOA. At the present time, [the] EPA does not believe there is any reason for consumers to stop using any products because of concerns about PFOA."
